Winston was a speech-enabled conversational assistant that transformed and summarized its users’ social feeds and news interests into a first-of-its-kind conversational information experience. During the week of Feb. 7th, 2014, the Apple App Store featured Wiston under its ‘Bite-Sized News’ section. Users downloaded the app over 74,000 times and gave it a 4+ star overall rating.

I was the lead iOS developer at the artificial intelligence company that built Wiston. To create Winston, we built a news feed by integrating RSS feeds and APIs from many different online publications. We used natural language processing (NLP) to summarize and extract keywords from articles. Then, we stored relations between keywords and articles in a custom knowledge graph. As a result, a keyword from any story in Winston’s feed could serve as a jumping point to explore related articles. Our mission was to empower human curiosity by designing a better relationship between people and information.
