The Washington Post Newsletters Platform

  • Rearchitected high-volume email delivery infrastructure

  • Integrated large-scale personalization into campaigns

  • Led cross-team initiatives to scale content distribution

As Staff Software Engineer, I lead technical efforts behind Carta—The Washington Post’s end-to-end platform for curating and sending email newsletters. Used by the newsroom, marketing, and subscription teams, Carta delivers more than 7 billion emails annually, including breaking news alerts, personalized subscriber journeys, and the Post’s flagship newsletters like Post Most and The 7.

In 2024, I rearchitected Carta’s backend to address scalability and performance bottlenecks. The new architecture reduced newsletter send times by 75%, enabled advanced personalization for over 100 newsletter campaigns, and is projected to save $86K annually in infrastructure costs. These improvements ensured stable, high-performance delivery during critical periods—most notably elections, when timely communication is essential.

My role spans architecture, backend development, DevOps, and cross-functional collaboration with editorial, data, and product teams. I’ve become a key technical liaison across departments, supporting initiatives like personalized subscription offers, predictive send-time optimization, and strategic marketing evaluations. Carta now powers the largest email sends in company history—serving over 9 million users with personalized, performant, and reliable emails.
