Co-inventor of patented matching algorithm
Developed iOS proof-of-concept
As Tech Lead, I led a product development team that built Trial Match. The application enables real-time clinical trial matching for patients and their physicians. In 2017, a leading cancer research institute acquired Trial Match to deploy it across its network of cancer care practices. The application now evaluates 1.6m patients profiles against 320 clinical trials.
Behind Trial Match is a patented software algorithm invented by our engineering team. We use graph structures in a novel way to facilitate data integration from many clinical sources. We start by creating a graph modeling inclusion and exclusion criteria for a trial. Then we map networks of clinical taxonomies onto the graph of criteria. By traversing from different taxonomies to the same criteria, we can evaluate data from many providers. This allows us to use loosely structured data to match patients to trials in ways that were previously unfeasible.
In 2019, this algorithm led to a 32% increase in clinical trial enrollment. As a result, thousands of cancer patients received access to life-saving, targeted treatments that outperform standard of care alternatives.
